google drive - Automatic transfer large files between 2 sites behind fire walls
2014-04
I thought this will have an answer on this site, but after some searching I couldn't find anything useful.
Here is my situation. I want to setup an automatic way to transfer some backup from one computer on one site to another computer on another site. Both sites are heavily firewalled, but http and email are opened, also GoToMyPC, dropbox, and google drive works on both pc's. There is only 1 file to be transferred, but it is about 5-10GB in size. We tried some combination of scripting and dropbox, but dropbox transfer is just too slow. We use google drive manually now, and we don't know how to automate that...
Is there any way we can do this? (fast and work through http). It is difficult to convenience management to allow for any open port on the firewall.
Thanks in advance!
Bigger file transfer would mean more chances of corruption, for regular works better use a personal bit torrent network.
One of my friends is now in China and wants to send me his home-made video files. I have a Linux hosting account on GoDaddy and I've configured an FTP account for him. Unfortunately he's having trouble in using the FTP account.
Can you recommend a better option?
If it's 2 GB or less (at a time), Dropbox is a good option, it's utterly dead simple to use, and you can either share account to account, or put it in the web accessable public account. Also if one of you recommends the other, you get an extra 250 MB space.
Note that most of browsers are showing FTPs on a quite transparent way.
If you give a direct link to your file, like a ftp://user:[email protected] (note sure fully about the syntax, though), he won't even have to bother with using a FTP client. It will be like downloading a regular file from Internet. It could be a way to make it easier, using what you already prepared.
Another method would be for both of you to create an Ubuntuone (or similar service) account, have him save those files to his Ubuntuone account and then share them to your account.
If the file is smaller than 200 MB, use www.mailbigfile.com to send the file. You may even find it's worth paying for their pro account as it's pretty cheap and possibly more convenient than the (good) alternatives already suggested.
Snailmail and Sneakernet are still some fast and cheap bulk data transport services.
