osx - Built-in trackpad and keyboard stopped working on my MacBook when I paired with Bluetooth keyboard and mouse

I paired the magic mouse and keyboard from my iMac with my MacBook, now I can't use the built-in trackpad and keyboard anymore. I've tried deleting them from the Bluetooth preference pane but that doesn't fix the issue.

I've used other bluetooth mice and keyboards with this MacBook before and not had this problem. My only thought is that possibly it's related to the fact that the peripherals came with the iMac and my MacBook now thinks that it's an iMac and doesn't have a built-in trackpad/keyboard.

You should disable the bottom option in System Preferences -> Trackpad (highlighted in red).

I highly doubt that your MBP would think it's an iMac. If this doesn't solve the problem, you can head into System Profiler (Applications -> Utilities -> System Profiler) and verify that the Apple internal keyboard/mouse is installed as a USB device.

There is an option in System Preferences that allows you to disable the internal trackpad and keyboard when you connect external ones. You need to disable this.

osx - Why do my bluetooth devices stop working on my MacBook Pro
  • Jeff Leonard

I have this intermittent problem with Bluetooth devices on my MacBook Pro.

Even with a fresh set of batteries, occasionally my MacBook pro just seems to "lose" one or the other of them. The Bluetooth preferences says they are still connected, but the computer is not processing any input from them. If I disconnect a malfunctioning device from the preferences tab and reconnect from the preferences tab it always starts working, but if I turn the device off and back on it never starts working.

This is a known issue that has been fixed in OS X 10.5.8.

I have this happen with my Mighty Mouse occasionally. My suspicion is that there's a bug in Apple's Bluetooth daemon (at least in OS X 10.5, because it didn't happen in 10.4). Turning off Bluetooth and then turning it back on again seems to get it back to normal (until the next occurrence).
