hard drive - Error 80070570 when installing Vista

    First some background:

I'm trying to upgrade the hard drive in an Advent 5301 laptop. I've already tried cloning it, but I couldn't get that method to work. So now I'm trying to install Vista onto the new hard drive using an OEM installation disc.

For some reason, there's no settings in the BIOS. I think they've been locked off by the OEM. I therefore cannot view or change IDE/AHCI settings, CPU voltages, etc. Pretty much all I can do is change the boot order.

    Now the problem:

When I run the Vista installation, everything seems to progress as it should. I have formatted and partitioned the hard drive successfully, so there should effectively be no data there to interfere with the installation. Since the laptop recognises the hard drive and partitions, I'm assuming this means that Vista's drivers are compatible with the new hard drive?

The error appears after copying the files to the hard drive. "Extracting files" completes, then after some time "Copying files" gets to 100% but then raises this message:

Windows cannot install required files. The file may be corrupt or missing. Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation.

I've checked the disc; it's in immaculate condition, and has always been stored in its case.

I'd like to know if there's any other steps I can take to get Vista onto this new hard drive. Any help is much appreciated!

    EDIT:

I've now tried downloading the installation disc from the internet, creating a bootable drive and booting it that way. No luck; I was presented with the same error message at the same stage in the installation. This rules out problems with the installation media and the using the laptop's disc drive.

I've tried using different RAM in the laptop. Again, the error message reared its ugly head. This rules out problems with the memory.

Could this issue be a limitation applied by the manufacturer, whereby only a specific model of hard drive can be used? Even a specific serial number, paired when they assembled the laptop? This is not something I know much about.

This is normally due to the source being corrupted now as you say its fine condition so maybe the DVD drive itself. I would guess if it was the new drive you would have a different error.

It can be other hardware related such as memory (being the main one).

My advise is to use another machine (if possible) and create a bootable USB of the DVD using Microsoft's own tool:

    http://www.microsoftstore.com/store/msusa/html/pbPage.Help_Win7_usbdvd_dwnTool

You may need to create an ISO of the DVD first, quite a few free tools for this Magic ISO springs to mind unsure if its still free though!

hard drive - Vista: Disk Errors

Running Vista here and I'm getting a couple of problems with what appears to be the HDD.

Symptoms are the system becoming totally unresponsive. Cannot shutdown via start menu. Other symptoms include being unable to open any MMC windows ("event viewer has stopped working").

Event Viewer is showing up 2 things I think are related to it.

A warning: An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 during a paging operation.

An error: The file system structure on the disk is corrupt and unusable. Please run the chkdsk utility on the volume Vista.

Already tried disabling paging; didn't seem to work. Still on the to do list is a defrag.

chkdsk has already been run - Windows will do it every time I unexpectedly shut down.

A quick google will tell you that the problem happens with a variety of hardware/software combos. UPH Cleanup service from Microsoft fixes the problem in previous versions of Windows but its installed by default in Vista.

The machine is about 4 months old. I'm hoping the HDD isn't on the way out already :P already prepared for the worst though

Any suggestions/comments welcome. If you need any more info please comment.

Thanks in advance for reading :)

*Edit: * This is starting to feel like a heat problem. When the problem occurs, I restart. When I restart I seem to get less and less time to use the machine. But when I leave it to cool, it seems I can use it longer... Could this be heat related?

Sounds like you're right, it appears to be the hard disk. You can check it out with a third-party tool like SpinRite to see if it truly is the hard disk, but it sounds right with the info provided.

I'd contact the manufacturer of the hard disk and see if you can get a replacement. Some of them will send the replacement hard disk to you and then you can ship it back afterwards (after you transfer all of your data to the new one (I recommend Ghost)).

Check the hard drive's SMART status. If the drive is failing, you will see errors there.

PassMark DiskCheckup should be a good choice.

    Edit:

If the hard drive is not to blame, it could be another hardware fault, such as a problem with the memory. Run Memtest86+ overnight and see if it reports problems there.

Turns out this drive has 2 partitions and Windows was only checking one of them.

Looks like whats fixed it is running a chkdsk on the other partition.

Whats weird is the fan wasn't responsive before and it is now.

So there you go, if you run into a problem like this with a newish hard drive, make sure you check all partitions!

Will not accept my answer until I'm 100% sure that the issue is resolved

Edit: No problems since running the chkdsk on 2nd partition so happy days!
