External Hard drive doesn't show up anywhere

I have already checked Device Manager and Disk Management already so please don't suggest those two. My problem right now is that my WD My Passport stopped being recognized one day out of the blue. It seems the drive is recognized in Device Manager as WD SES Device but without drivers, I have already installed the drivers with multiple methods over 10 times on 2 different computers, I've tried different ports and different operating systems. The thing I can think of now is that the physical disk is bad, but that wouldn't make sense as the Disk Drive driver also shows inside the Device Manager, it also shows when I use a tool to read PCI ports. Is there anything I haven't tried that someone could suggest to me?

I have a WD MyBook 1TB external drive. I recently put the hard drive in my desktop and wanted to use the enclosure with other hard drives. I tried this and get driver errors.

I am using Windows 7 Pro 64bit. I've hunted around for drivers and looked through forums for help but can't seem to figure it out.

If any one can help me use my WD enclosure with none WD hard drives, I would be very happy.

Some external USB hard drives now use proprietary Sata connections inside, others may have something in the USB firmware to prevent re-use of the enclosure with different hard drives than originally came in them, another reason to build your own external USB hard drive.

Here is a picture (left) of a Western Digital 2.5" proprietary hard drive that came out of a USB enclosure they manufactured Sept 2009.
