    Possible Duplicate:
How do I install and use Windows Virtual PC in Windows 8?

According to this blog post and various other sources on the internet, the 'Pro' version of Windows 8 includes Microsoft Hyper-V virtualisation, but I when I search for it in the Start Screen I get no results.

Hyper-V is included with Windows 8 Pro but not enabled by default on a fresh install.

It is an optional Windows feature that you need to enable manually:

    1. Press Win + R to launch the run box

    2. Type OptionalFeatures.exe and press Enter

    3. Check Hyper-V and click OK to enable the feature.

    4. Launch the Start Screen and search, 'Hyper-V Manager' should now be available.

Note: Hyper-V is not available if you are running Windows 8 in a virtual machine. i.e. 'Nested virtualisation' is not supported.

virtualization - Can I tell if my VPS server (win 2008) is hosted on Hyper-V from within the image?
  • Andrew M

Is it possible, from within a windows 2008 virtual private server, to tell if the image is hosted in Hyper-V or some other virtualization technology? For example, are there any guest-os extensions that might be installed?

Background: I previously bought a VPS server from a company who offer VPS images hosted on either Virtuozzo or Hyper-V. I thought my original server was on Hyper-V, but it turned out I bought the wrong package. Now that the month is over I've ordered another server, and want to check I haven't made the same mistake.

Under Windows 2008 running on Hyper-V the network adapters usually show up as "Microsoft Virtual Machine Bus Network Adapter" in the Device Manager.

Also, here's some info on accessing the BIOS information via WMI/VBS to determine if you're inside a VM or not.

    Hope that helps...
