display - Image doesn't fill monitor when connected via HDMI

    Connecting a Dell Studio Slim to a Dell ST2210 21.5" monitor. The PC has a ATI Radeon HD 4350 video card. The video card has DVI and HDMI connections. When I connect with the DVI everything works fine. When I connect with the HMDI the image doesn't fill the screen, i.e. there's a approx 1 inch black border around the image. Win7 tells me the res is 1920x1080 (the native res of the monitor). Tried rebooting, no luck.

    I get the same when outputting to my TV on a Nvidia based laptop.

    Take a look in the ATI settings, you want to find a setting that deals with Overscan / image size.

    As an Nvidia user for years, I am not exactly sure where the setting is, I found this picture and hope it helps you find it:

    I had exactly the same issue with my HD3200 based HTPC setup.

    When using HDMI the ATI driver defaults to a 15% Underscan.

    If you are using the newer (9.6 or later) version of Catalyst then ATI helpfully hid the Overscan options. When you are looking at the monitor selection section of CCC you need to right click on the small monitor icon at the bottom and select configure, not the big one at the top. You'll then be able to see the screen posted above.

    Thanks ATI for making things easy to find, it took me a lot of Google fu to find that one...

    I think it is rather an "overscan" or "just scan" setting on the TV resp. monitor than on the graphics card. Maybe you should also look here.

    I use a Toshiba Portege laptop. I also have an LG W2452V monitor hooked up via HDMI. The notebook lid is normally closed and I only use the monitor.

    Today the monitor refuses to show anything. However it seems as if it has signal.

    Some tests I did:

    • If i unplug the HDMI cable I can hear the Windows "device disconnected sound". The monitor displays the "No signal" message and the LED turns yellow. When I plug the cable again I hear the "device connected sound" from Windows, the "No signal" message is removed from the monitor, the monitor LED turns blue, the whole screen lights up as if it's going to display something and then nothing...

    • Same behavior if I use the special laptop button that shifts through the available signal modes. E.g. if I pick "laptop LCD only" the monitor shuts down. If I pick the HDMI or HDMI/LaptopMonitor the monitor shows the above signs but it doesn't show anything.

    • Using the "Extend desktop to second monitor" has the same results. The mouse cursor can move to the monitor but nothing is displayed...

    Any ideas?

    i actually had this happen with my dell laptop last night that i had plugged into my tv. the only way i could get it working again was to reboot the machine. i was assuming there was an issue when the laptop went into screensaver or sleep mode and just wouldn't disply back on correctly. haven't looked too much into it yet, but the reboot did fix my issue.

    I unplugged and replugged the monitor power and this fixed it. Weird but at least everything is OK now.
