    What is the gender standard of a serial connection?

    Seems that all computer's serial ports are male, but it is ambiguous the peripheral gender... I see printers with female DB9 connectort and also male DB9 connector.

    Thanks.

    Both. You need a male and a female end to couple.

    That is common, but by no means a rule. It is not a standard per se, just more of a convention. In computers, like everything else, people are really resistant to change things that have been around for a while if they work well enough.

    I see printers with female DB9 connectort and also male DB9 connector.

    And that is why gender-changers, -couplers, and -adapters exist. There is nothing in the format itself that requires it to be male or female, ultimately “it’s all pipes”… well wires.

    Up to some years ago, there was no standard in serial devices.
    For this reason, I was equipped with a small bag with:

    • DB9/25 gender adapters;
    • DB9/25 converters;
    • DB9/25 tester (a box with jumpers ad switches to test any available configuration of wires)
    • DB9/25 shelves with removable/configurable wires (both male and female).

    It's a bit frustrating being in the desert of Algeria, after 3 hours of travel, trying to plug a serial cable into a PLC to flush new software and discover that you pick the wrong cable...

    USB to Serial adapter/cable Windows/Mac/Linux

    I'm looking to get a USB to Serial cable for my Mac/Win/Linux preferably small in size and without unnecessary software installations. I've had one a while ago, it would only work with Windows. On my Mac I can just plug any USB printer or scanner and it'd just work without installing anything, so that's what I want in that USB to Serial. can someone suggest me one?

    This is the best one out there when is comes to mac compatibility. It does require some software installation though.

    It states on the amazon site linux and windows compatibility.

    It is the best for os x because of the driver support and ease of use. Every GPS owner and os x I know has always come back to this adapter for serial support. I'm sure this translates for other uses as well. There are other options out there for os x, but this one has the best support and drivers. Plus, it supports all the major OS's.

    For very high performance, low latency support FTDI usb-serial have been verified as solid on OS X. Just do a search to find numerous options. The performance measurements came from the developer of a scientific toolbox for matlab who verified sub-millisecond precision.

    Startec also make reliable usb-serial cables with OS X drivers:
