memory - Tested Thoroughly, Still don't know why Computer Locks Up Randomly

I've had this problem and it's been an ongoing battle of diagnosis for months now. My computer will, at seemingly random times, simple freeze up. Mouse stops moving, CTRL-ALT-DLT doesn't do anything, nor does anything fix the problem besides a hard reset.

    System Specs: - Win8.1 Pro - i7-3770k Non Overclocked - EVGA GTX 760 2gb ACX - Crucial Ballistix Sport 8GB - Corsair CX500 - Samsung 840 Pro 120gb - WD Caviar Black 1TB

I've RMA'd the motherboard and gone through two power supplies, memtested the memory, and 3dmarked the GPU, all with no issues. Yet the problem persists. Nothing is created in Event Viewer, there are no temp issues (max system temp is 40C, GPU 60C, CPU 55C) and no error messages ever explain the problem. I'm pretty sure all drivers are up to date, and I've reformatted and reinstalled windows twice already.

    I'm stuck.

I have this problem on my workstation. The computer would effectively freeze for 2-5 seconds for no apparent reason, then continue as normal. While frozen the mouse would still be movable, but only on one of screens in my multi-screen setup. What can be the likely cause.

    System:

    • CPU: i7-920
    • Memory: 12G of Patriot DDR3, 6 modules
    • OS: SLED 11, Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop, using Gnome
    • Main board: Asus P6T
    • Video: two Nvidia 9500GT connected to three displays

I am using memory at recommended settings of 8-8-8-1333. It has an XMP profile. Th CPU is a bit overclocked to 3.3 GHz, but my cooling more than allows for it. I ran the computer with all overclocks off and lower memory speed but the issue was still there.

Any ideas? Where should I start looking?

Any chance your workstation is mounting /home over nfs? That can cause the exact symptoms you describe if your network connectivity gets interrupted or the nfs server goes down briefly.
