Trying to boot on Windows 7 install disk in external Blu Ray drive on Mac
2014-07
I am working from a Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011, with a Memorex Blu Ray and DVD RW drive, plugged in via USB, trying to boot up Windows 7 Home Edition.
When I hold down option on boot, I see Windows
and EFI Boot
. When I choose Windows
, the screen goes completely black (off) then a slightly lighter black, as if the screen is on, but the image is completely black. Nothing after that. When I choose the EFI Boot
, the menu freezes up.
When I tried to use Disk Utility to copy the contents of the DVD to a flash drive, I received the following error: Could not validate source - error 254
.
To be clear, the Windows install disk is a DVD, and the external drive I have is Blu Ray, with DVD capabilities, so I don't think that could be the issue. Is there a reason why the Blu Ray drive might not be bootable? Should I be choosing Windows
or EFI Boot
?
You can't buy a mac with a blu-ray device in it, but there are external USB blu-ray recorders and readers available.
Is it possible to use (Backup files to BD-R discs and watch blu-ray movies) an external Blu-Ray recorder on a Mac?
If it is not possible in OS X natively, is it possible from a virtual machine?
Yes, it looks like you can: http://www.lacie.com/us/products/product.htm?pid=11218
its bundled with Toast software for reading/writing Blue-Rays on Mac OS X: http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/toast/default.html
