Trying to boot on Windows 7 install disk in external Blu Ray drive on Mac

I am working from a Macbook Pro 15" Early 2011, with a Memorex Blu Ray and DVD RW drive, plugged in via USB, trying to boot up Windows 7 Home Edition.

When I hold down option on boot, I see Windows and EFI Boot. When I choose Windows, the screen goes completely black (off) then a slightly lighter black, as if the screen is on, but the image is completely black. Nothing after that. When I choose the EFI Boot, the menu freezes up.

When I tried to use Disk Utility to copy the contents of the DVD to a flash drive, I received the following error: Could not validate source - error 254.

To be clear, the Windows install disk is a DVD, and the external drive I have is Blu Ray, with DVD capabilities, so I don't think that could be the issue. Is there a reason why the Blu Ray drive might not be bootable? Should I be choosing Windows or EFI Boot?
