Linux: image viewer with transparent window?
2014-03
I would like to display a fully opaque image (e.g. PNG RGB8) on the desktop in an image viewer - but such that I can set the window (showing the image) to be, say, 50% transparent (so I could see through and compare with other windows below). It would be even better if the viewer just shows a "panel" instead of a "window" (i.e. I'd prefer just the image shown, possibly with a border - instead of a full blown window with menubar, titlebar etc).
I'm aware that in Compiz, it should be possible to run a plugin, and have any window you want transparent - but I was hoping for a solution (viewer) that would not be Compiz-specific (and even more preferred, if it is neither Gnome nor KDE specific - but I'm not sure that is possible). ...
Any suggestions for an image viewer like this?
To my knowledge, window transparency is the job of the window manager. I'm pretty sure--but someone please correct me if I'm wrong--that the only way to accomplish this is by using a window manager, such as Compiz, that supports transparency.
How come you don't want to use Compiz? If you're just trying to avoid Gnome and KDE, you can use Compiz independently of your desktop environment.
I have a png image that has a white background. Is there anyway to take the white and make it transparent.
you can use Photofiltre (small, fast, free and portable):
load the image
go to Image > Transparent Color...
choose the color (white), set the desired tolerance with the slider, click OK
go to File > Save as... and save the image as .PNG
I haven't seen a solution using Paint.NET here yet. It's an awesome lightweight image editor. To quote Jeff: "It raises the quality bar,"
- Download, install and run Paint.NET
- File > Open > Select your image
Click the Magic Wand tool:
- Click the white background on your image
- Press Delete
- File > Save
You can also select the tolerance of the magic wand tool before your use it to get rid of the "crust" or whatever you want to call it around your leftover image.
For this you have to scan those pages in which you want to do editing, and Click http://www.converttoword.com/ login, upload & convert to word & then edit. At 25-50cents a page this service is worth having the freedom of doing from anywhere anytime in small quantity.
use GIMP... Select the white area and erase or delete it, you can select and use the DEL key, or use the eraser if that doesn't work as needed. Then save it as a PNG.
Photoshop (and Photoshop Elements) magic wand tool will allow you to select contiguous colours. You may want to play with the tolerance a bit... Once selected, hit delete to remove the white.
